Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
- Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m
- Distance: 11 km
- Time: 5–7 hours
The trek begins with registration at Machame Gate before entering a dense tropical rainforest. The trail is well-defined but can be muddy and humid, with towering trees, moss-covered branches, and occasional sightings of monkeys and birds. The steady climb gradually gains altitude until you reach Machame Camp, where you settle in for your first night on the mountain.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
- Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m
- Distance: 5 km
- Time: 4–6 hours
As you leave the rainforest behind, the landscape opens into moorland with expansive views. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant lobelias and senecio plants appearing along the trail. The air becomes cooler and drier as you ascend towards Shira Camp, located on a plateau with stunning panoramic views of the mountain.
Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
- Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m then down to 3,960m
- Distance: 10 km
- Time: 6–8 hours
This is a key acclimatization day. You ascend gradually to Lava Tower, where you may begin to feel the effects of higher altitude. After a short break, you descend to Barranco Camp, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. The descent helps your body adjust while offering incredible views of the Barranco Valley and surrounding glaciers.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
- Distance: 5 km
- Time: 4–5 hours
The day begins with the climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble that rewards you with spectacular views. Once at the top, the trail continues across ridges and valleys with dramatic scenery. The shorter distance allows time for rest and acclimatization before the final push toward the summit.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
- Distance: 4 km
- Time: 3–4 hours
Today’s trek is shorter but takes place in a harsh alpine desert environment. The terrain is rocky and exposed, with minimal vegetation. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you have an early dinner and rest, preparing for the summit attempt, which begins later that night.
Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
- Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m then down to 3,100m
- Distance: 17 km
- Time: 10–14 hours
The summit attempt starts around midnight. The climb is slow and steady in cold, dark conditions, guided by headlamps. Reaching Stella Point at sunrise is a major milestone, with breathtaking views above the clouds. From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, you descend carefully to Mweka Camp, passing through different climate zones as you lose altitude.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
- Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
- Distance: 10 km
- Time: 3–4 hours
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest, offering a refreshing contrast to the summit environment. At Mweka Gate, you complete formalities and receive your summit certificate before returning to your hotel.
Day 9: Departure
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure. Optional safari or Zanzibar extensions can be arranged if you wish to continue your adventure.
