Day 2: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
- Elevation: 1,600m to 2,850m
- Distance: 11 km
- Time: 5–7 hours
The trek begins at Umbwe Gate and immediately enters dense rainforest. This is one of the steepest starts on Kilimanjaro, with narrow trails and continuous ascent. The forest is rich with birdlife and monkeys, creating a lively atmosphere. The climb is physically demanding from the beginning, setting the tone for the adventure ahead. You arrive at Umbwe Camp surrounded by thick forest and enjoy your first night on the mountain.
Day 3: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
- Elevation: 2,850m to 3,960m
- Distance: 6 km
- Time: 4–5 hours
Leaving the rainforest behind, the landscape begins to open up into moorland and rocky terrain. The trail becomes less steep but remains challenging as you gain altitude. As you approach Barranco Camp, you are rewarded with spectacular views of the Barranco Valley and the impressive Barranco Wall. This camp is considered one of the most scenic on the mountain and offers a good opportunity to acclimatize.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
- Distance: 5 km
- Time: 4–5 hours
The day begins with the climb up the Barranco Wall, a highlight of the trek. Although it looks steep, it is a manageable scramble with guidance from your team. Once at the top, the trail continues across ridges and valleys with impressive views of glaciers and surrounding peaks. The shorter distance helps your body adjust to the altitude before the summit push.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
- Distance: 4 km
- Time: 3–4 hours
Today’s trek is shorter but takes you into a harsh alpine desert environment. Vegetation becomes scarce, and the air is thinner as you approach Barafu Camp. This is the final base before the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the night climb, which begins around midnight.
Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
- Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m then down to 3,100m
- Distance: 17 km
- Time: 10–14 hours
The summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning under the stars. The climb is slow and steady, requiring determination and focus. You reach Stella Point at sunrise, where the first light reveals breathtaking views above the clouds. From here, a final push leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating this achievement, you begin your descent to Mweka Camp, passing through changing landscapes as you lose altitude.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
- Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
- Distance: 10 km
- Time: 3–4 hours
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest, offering a gentle and refreshing end to the trek. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate. You are then transferred back to your hotel for rest and celebration.
Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure. Optional safari or Zanzibar extensions can be arranged if you wish to continue your journey.
